Artificial water Fluoridation involves the addition of the chemicals Hexafluorosilicic Acid or Disodium Hexafluorosilicate to public drinking water supplies at a level of 1 part per million parts of water.

This is seen as a public health measure and has been promoted as such to help prevent dental cavities in vulnerable groups, mainly of children between the ages of 6-12.

In the latter half of 2003 Dr Paul Emerson of the IOM DHSS Public Health Directorate voiced his support for artificial fluoridation of the Island's water supply, and since that time government has been in 'consultation' on the issue.

In February 2007 the Health Minister, Mr Eddie Teare MHK announced that there would be a 12 month 'public consultation', and that at the end of this period depending on the outcome of the consultation a decision to Fluoridate may become policy. We urge the public to become interested and actively involved in this issue because it will affect everyone every day for the rest of their lives. The decision the people of the Isle of Man make over the coming year will also affect future unborn generations.

The two fluoridation chemicals named above are different from the fluorides you will find in your fluoride toothpaste, they are different because they are not pharmaceutical grade fluorides, but instead come from major industry, namely the phosphate fertiliser industry, they are also contaminated with other toxins such as lead and arsenic.  It is illegal to dump these toxic waste chemicals on land, in the sea or to release them into the atmosphere, yet it seems perfectly acceptable to government to consider diluting them into our drinking water supply!
